zinc and copper plates

One very common plates which are used to made prints are Zinc and copper printing plates. So, why they are special and different from other materials? Zinc is a soft, light metal that can be easily carved into. It allows artists to scratch their designs into zinc plates very quickly, without too much strength or force. This is why zinc is so popular with those who want to make fine and delicate pieces.

On the contrary, copper is a sturdy and tough metal. This strong paper will enable artists to make very high quality prints. Copper plates take longer to prepare than zinc for printing, though. Many artists prefer copper, even if it's a bit more complex to deal with since it creates such gorgeous prints that are truly breathtaking.

The Relationship Between Zinc and Copper Plates in the Engraving Process

Etching is an art form, so artists start with a flat metal plate. They will use various tools to scratch or draw their design on the surface of the plate. Once they complete their design, the plate is immersed in an acid bath. The acid penetrates and eats its way through the surface, leaving behind the lines and grooves of whatever design has been etched in.

Zinc and copper plates are actually often used in this process by artists. They may have first etched their design onto a zinc plate, and then transferred that design to a copper plate, from which to print. This technique is called the double-plate etching method. This is impressive as it allows artists to produce very fine line work and high details in several colors when doing prints.
